Anglo Irish Bank Corporation Limited - Appointment of Group Chief Executive

The Board of Anglo Irish Bank announces the appointment of Mr Mike Aynsley as Group Chief Executive following an international recruitment process.

Mr. Aynsley has over 30 years experience in banking and in financial services consulting in Australia, New Zealand, the Asia Pacific Region and the United Kingdom. He will start as Group Chief Executive of the Bank on September 7th. Mr Donal O’Connor, who has been Executive Chairman of the Bank since 19th February 2009, will revert to the position of non-executive Chairman when Mr Aynsley joins the Bank.

“This is the first key step in establishing a new leadership team in Anglo Irish Bank and the Board is pleased to be appointing a Group Chief Executive with strong capabilities, expertise and excellent experience,” says Donal O’Connor. “Mike will play a key role in the appointment of the leadership team, a process which will accelerate once he is on board. Our on-going focus is to stabilise and de-risk the Bank and, in time, to create options for the shareholder. The appointment of a new Group Chief Executive with such a depth of experience in banking and risk management, combined with a new leadership team, will provide added impetus towards realising these objectives.“

Mr Aynsley has been working on a number of high-level projects since January 2006, most recently with the Asian Development Bank in South East Asia, in the areas of financial sector development, risk management, liquidity management and governance risk assessment. During this time he worked closely with regulatory and government authorities across a range of areas including capital markets. In 2004/05 he held senior positions, including Chief Risk Officer in New Zealand for the ANZ Bank and the National Bank of New Zealand. Prior to this he was a Global Partner, Banking and Financial Services with Deloitte Consulting for five years. He was General Manager – Global Markets, Global Wholesale Financial Services for National Australia Bank from the early nineties, having held senior management positions with Security Pacific National Bank from the early eighties in Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom.

He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Macquarie University, which he obtained in 2007.

Commenting on his appointment Mr Aynsley says: “The Bank, and all of its stakeholders have formidable challenges ahead and I look forward to playing my part in meeting those challenges with determination, responsibility and hard work.”

Mr Aynsley’s appointment has been approved by the Financial Regulator and has been welcomed by the Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan TD.
